Psalm 90:12

Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12

What does it say?
This is a prayer asking God to teach the speaker to be aware of how short life is. The change in perspective gives one wisdom because it increases urgency and purposefulness in how we live.

What questions do I have about what it says?
O What does it mean to number our days?
O How does numbering our days help one gain a heart of wisdom?

What does the text mean?
Psalm 90 is a reflection on the greatness of God. It extols the eternal attributes of God and contrasts it with the fleeting and finitness of man. It is a warning as much as it is a reflection or man to live life knowing that the suredness of life is like a vapor. It barely takes shape then begins to disperse and fade. Wisdom is gained when we live with a heavenly/eternal perspective of life. We cherish every moment more dearly. We weigh the impact of our decisions more deeply. And we enjoy the blessings of God more richly.

How does the text apply to me?
This verse challenges me to live more intentionally knowing that every minute I'm on this earth is a gift. To live with a sense of urgency and to make sure that my I'm aligned with the priorities of the kingdom of God. I'm encouraged to savor the abundance of life that I have in Christ because now every moment becomes sweeter and every relationship and experience I have becomes more precious to me knowing that these are gifts from God and that none of what I have will last forever. I'm challenged to make sure that I'm not taking the things I have for granted and to turn what might be complaints into praise recognizing that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights.
